Annette demands that you watch it in a cinema, and that's no hollow threat. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't take the film's advice.
Tender, psychotic and above all unashamedly absurd, Annette is a film that no trailer can prepare you for. Its ability to consistently shock as it unfurls, to move half an audience to howling laughter while the rest sit still in their seats is incredible and makes the cinematic experience all the more essential. The music is hypnotic and perfectly synced with the visuals of the film in a way that few, if any musicals have ever accomplished. Putting aside many of the cinematic cliches of the genre to create a work of art that borrows from everything from morality fables to music videos and tabloid headlines, Annette miraculously manages to create a perfect storm of fact and fiction. Switching from intimacy to the limelight in the course of seconds, it is a series of perfectly married contradictions, a reflection on love and celebrity and above all a brilliant piece of cinema. The credit to one Edgar Allen Poe is rather tale-telling, and this film feels cuttingly modern while retaining a sense of timelessness. All together a steller production that I hope will create division and chaos between you and your friends.
Annette will have a limited theatrical release before being released on Amazon Prime. Catch it while you can.
