This week we were to continue with yet another Émile Reynaud animation, but that too fell victim to his destructive bout of depression. So we move on to the next title: the famous 'Blacksmith Scene' from 1893.
IMDb title #0000004: 'Un bon bock' (1892, Charles-Émile Reynaud)
IMDb title #0000005: 'Blacksmith Scene' (1893, William K.L. Dickson)
Made in our namesake, Thomas Edison's own Black Maria production studio, 'Blacksmith Scene' is considered the first live action film with "actors" in it. As opposed to mounting the camera in front of people going about the errands of their day and whatnot, here we have three Edison employees pretending to be blacksmiths and sharing a beer. What was it about Godard saying that "cinema is the most beautiful fraud in the world"?
