IMDb title #0000016: 'Barque sortant du port' (1895, Louis Lumière)

Yet another Lumière film (this one made without the credited participation of Louis's brother Auguste), 'Boat leaving the port' was, like most all of their films, shot on 35mm using their all-in-one Cinématographe camera and projector.

One of the elements of this curio that we find particularly interesting is the framing. Louis Lumière seems to have evolved in his shot composition and camera placement, deliberately placing the camera in accordance with the rule of thirds. You have part of the jetty in the upper right third of the frame, the horizon just above it lining the entire top third. This leaves the rowboat to sail around in the rest of the frame.

It seems that rudimentary film language is being created.
